Lord of the Rings
Tuesday, 23 December 2003 20:55Just came back from seeing Return of the King with Stella. Well, kind of with her—we went to the cinema together and came back together, but sat in different theatres since I was watching the film in English and she in German.
The English version was in the largest theatre again this time, unlike last year. I think this is a better solution, since those who wish to see LOTR in German on a large screen have about a dozen other cinemas to choose from in Hamburg, but there's only one that shows (mainstream) films in English. And the cinema was fairly well filled, even though we chose the afternoon screening (14:45).
I was a bit disappointed that they didn't show the Scouring of the Shire, but I imagine that it would have taken too much time, and the way the did the end was internally consistent as well.
On the whole, I was more impressed with the part after the break (roughly, the second half).

Which makes me wonder what PJ's end of Saruman will be, in the extended version.

Battles etc. could have been cut, but it wasn't just the time, it was where it was. While audiences wouldn't have had much of a problem with more in the middle, more at the end would not have gone over so well.
But, I hope that they made it and it's in the extended version :)
