When is Boxing Day this year?

I used to think that "Boxing Day" = "26 December", but it seems that at least originally, Boxing Day was "the first weekday after Christmas", when service workers received Christmas-boxes—which makes sense, since the milkman, postman, etc. would typically not work on a Sunday (would they?).

So would Boxing Day be on 27 December this year?

Today, Amy is three months old! Happy Birthday, little Amy!

From the "Learn a new thing every day" department:

Did you know that the ubiquitous "obidos" in Amazon URLs comes from the town Óbidos in Brazil, located at the narrowest and swiftest part of the Amazon River? Its name, in turn, derives ultimately from the Latin word oppidum for a citadel or fortified city.

"varzea" is also related to the Amazon River.

For my birthday this year I got:

  • The Sims 2 hint book (or whatever it's called)
  • The Perl CD Bookshelf (four(?) books on CD and one in paper)
  • a 128 MB USB keydrive
  • a BIG thesaurus
  • reflective bands to wrap around your legs while cycling
  • a DVD set of half of a Buffy season (which I returned, and I'll use the money for something else)

Yay!

Stella said that just now, Amy turned onto her left side for the first time from lying on her back! Tomorrow, the world!
