Exclaves are fun

I read in a comment on [livejournal.com profile] brad's journal about Point Roberts, Washington—part of the United States, but to get to the remainder of the state of Washington by land, you have to go through Canada.

It's at the tip of a peninsula that dips just below the 49th parallel, the official latitude defining the Canada-US border in that area, so it's a fairly small area.

Apparently, school children often have had a hassle getting to and from school in past years, since everything after 2nd grade involves crossing the US/CA border twice, and border controls have become more onerous since 2001.

Time zone "UT"

I used to think that LiveJournal was broken for sending out mails with a time zone of "UT" in the Date: header.

I thought it should be "UTC", but looking through RFC 2822 just now, I see that "UT" and "GMT" are listed but "UTC" is not. (Both are listed under "obs-zone", though, and the recommended way to specify the time zone appears to be numeric: +0100, -0900, etc.)

So it's a bug in Gmail that it thinks LiveJournal's comment notification emails are dated in PST or whatever it assumes (it won't tell me the message was dated "1 hour ago" until it's closer to eight or ten hours old, I forget how much exactly).
