I was reading an article that read, in part:

At first, I thought vermisst was from vermissen and wondered why a sensor would miss (in the sense "pine for, long for") a parking space—until I realised that it's from the less-frequently-used vermessen (to survey, to measure), which made quite a bit more sense.

you know.. there are people who say that vegetables have feelings... why shouldn't parking spaces have feelings too...
