I always thought that "honcho" was originally Spanish, or possibly Amerind... it looked kind of "Mexican" to me.

Turns out it's from Japanese 班長 hanchō "squad leader". Who knew?

I wonder whether it's possible to characterise the contents of my journal in just a few words :) Or to describe a "typical" entry.

I think there's probably quite a variety there, depending on what strikes my fancy at any given moment.

I thought it was either Spanish, Portugese or Italian. (or just Latin)

Completely off topic, but ...

... [livejournal.com profile] pne, if you'd be so kind as to check the latest post in my journal and offer your wisdom, someone in the [livejournal.com profile] vancouver community would really appreciate it.

I suppose if that were in kana (はんちょう) I would have recognized it, but I'm not familiar with the first kanji. If I would just study more, I would know these things...

Neither am I. Here's the entry in Jim Breen's dictionary database (http://etext.lib.virginia.edu/cgi-local/breen/wwwjdic?1MKU73ed), in case you're interested.

(I assume you know the second one (http://etext.lib.virginia.edu/cgi-local/breen/wwwjdic?1MKU9577), though.)

I know next to no Hebrew but added half a cent's worth to that entry.

I also pointed [livejournal.com profile] pleiades829 to it; AFAIK she knows some Hebrew. (Hm, that reminds me of someone else to ask.)

I looked it up offline soon after reading your entry, but the stroke-order diagrams are nice. I do know the second, though. I remember drilling myself on it and filling a line (on college ruled paper, I think) with as many as I could fit, very quickly.
