I'm glad I'm not an emetophobe (more info here)—someone who will go to great lengths to avoid vomiting, instead possibly living with nausea for hours on end.

I mean, it's not as if I frequently go, "Ah! A short trip to the vomitorium would really hit the spot!" or actually look forward to throwing up, but when the contents of my stomach fancy a bit of fresh air, I usually head to the toilet to get it over with. So it feels to me like a slightly unpleasant task that has to get done, so you might as well go and do it. I'm also glad that I usually get a bit of advance warning when my mouth starts salivating.

Yesterday, I ate some rice and meat sauce that was a bit off and had to throw up on three separate occasions over the course of the afternoon and evening. Perhaps a bit like using the toilet for other uses: takes time out of the day but you feel a bit better afterwards.

This morning, I felt decent and merely not-hungry. I had two rusks around noon and towards the afternoon I started feeling actually hungry again. So yay.

I'm impressed that someone could go for up to twelve years without vomiting; there's a certain stage beyond which I find vomiting is inevitable: no matter how hard I resist, it will come out.

There's also the opposite, emetophilia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emetophilia).

I'm not an emetophobe but I really don't like vomiting and will try to avoid it unless my stomach hurts very, very badly. One reason for this is that usually one strongly dislikes the taste of the kind of food one has thrown up. I always think "Oh no, if I throw up now, I won't be able to eat all those yummy ...(whatever) again."
And also otherwise, in my opinion, vomiting is certainly by far worse than "using the toilet for other uses".

But I once met someone who repeatedly said he'd rather die than vomit. Not sure how serious he was about that, though.

I'm lucky enough (until I say it, maybe...) that I've rarely needed to vomit. When I get sick, it's usually just a bit of a stomach ache. It goes away within a day or two, and I don't feel the need to purge anything.

That said, I don't hesitate when the need arises. I think I would much rather deal with that than the nausea. It's the quick and, as far as I'm concerned, standard way of removing any offensive contents of the stomach.

In my unscientific opinion, it can also be healthier -- after all, one reason is a reflex caused by "bad things" in the food, where it makes sense to get the offending substances out rather than letting them react further with your stomach or intestine walls or getting into your bloodstream.

I don't normally view vomiting as a choice. I don't enjoy vomiting, but if I need to, I will. I don't do anything to try to avoid or encourage it though. I just throw up if my body decides to throw up. I will sometimes try to go to the bathroom to see if I can convince the food to go out the other way, as I figure that is better. But if I'm going to vomit, so be it. And I do usually feel better afterward, since whatever I threw up was generally something making me sick.

That sounds similar to my feelings.

I think I was mostly thinking about the I don't do anything to try to avoid or encourage it bit -- for example, Stella will try for quite some time to avoid throwing up, while I don't.

whatever I threw up was generally something making me sick.

vomiting always makes me feel better when I'm sick or sometimes headachy. It gets rid of that yucky nauseaus feeling and while it's not pleasant to throw up, you feel better after.
