" stands for dot-5. (And dot-5 plus dots-145 is "day".)

Obviously I know what you're trying to say, but this form of notation is totally unfamiliar to me...

Ah, that makes sense. I had guessed that 1 stood for ay rather than punctuation, so couldn't figure out why something would precede d.

It's ASCII Braille, intended to be displayed with the "SimBraille" font (which shows dot patterns rather than letters).

Grade 1 (uncontracted) Braille would be more readable, since Braille letters map to ASCII letters, but with Grade 2 (contracted) Braille, the contractions as well as symbols used to introduce them will display as various punctuation characters. (In both cases, though, Braille punctuation will appear as numbers, e.g. 4 = full stop, 7 = parenthesis, 1 = comma, 6 = exclamation mark.)

Ah, no. 1 is dot-2 (comma, in this case; as a letter combination, it's 'ea').

I must be getting better at braille. It took me a moment to realize this wasn't regular inktype. :)

Do you have the SimBraille font? If not, installing it will let you see dots instead of letters in the text of this entry where I specified use of that font. (You can get it from this page (http://www.brl.org/simbraille.html), for example.)
