In France, visiting my penfriend. In a swimming pool, got something in my eyes, and exclaimed, "Ah! Mes œils!"

Cue laughter from my pen-friend and a reminder that the plural of œil is yeux. Oops, I knew that :)

(I also got curious looks when I referred to somebody's grandchildren as their grands-enfants around his family... I suppose it makes sense that your children's children, being even younger than your children, would be petits-enfants rather than grands-enfants, but I was taking my cue from English here.)

Man, I wish Spanish were so logical with family names. The only ones that make any sense at all are the ones that don't exist in English (compadre/comadre for "the parent of your godchild/godparent of your child" and concuñado/concuñada for "the spouse of your spouse's sibling" ... obviously those are literally "co-father/co-mother" and "co-brother/sister-in-law"). The words for great-grandparents and so on are based on the word for grandparent, but the prefixes are nonsensical, or at least, they're derived from Greek and really twisted: bisabuelo, tátarabuelo,... I forget the rest and the Internet isn't helping me, colloquially it then goes tátara tátarabuelo, tátara tátara tátarabuelo but I know (from a post on linguaphiles years and years ago) that there are actual words going back at least two or three more generations.

Greek has συμπέθερος/συμπεθέρα "co-father-in-law/co-mother-in-law" for the parent of your child's spouse, which I also found interesting that they had a word for, and it's also a relationship I know no word for in any other language I speak.

Apparently it does exist in Spanish (consuegro/consuegra) although I've never seen it used.
