This morning, I smiled at the lady sitting opposite me in the bus, as I sometimes do at random strangers (well... to tell the truth, random women). She smiled back.

Encouraged by that, I smiled at her again when she got off, and was a little surprised when she smiled back again and said something. I thought it was "Tschüs", but when I responded "Tschüs" she said "Tschüs". So I don't know what she said the first time; maybe "thanks"? It was something short.

Maybe I made someone's day :)

Roughly, "Bye". A moderately informal parting.

Especially when they smile back at you!

I personally consider "hallo" and "tschüs(s)" as rather neutral, "Guten Tag" and "Auf Wiedersehen" as formal and "hi" and "tschau/ciao" as informal.
