Terrestrial Space Navy
Thursday, 30 October 2008 19:22I'm just reading a science fiction story set in the future, with a huge confederation of human worlds.
Earth has sent some space warships to fight an enemy, and the story just mentioned the position of an admiral in the "Terrestrial Space Navy" -- and I realised how incongruous that was: essentially, it means something like "earth-based air-based water-based forces", cxu ne? :)

Date: Wednesday, 5 November 2008 21:30 (UTC)I guess "terrestrial" would just refer to its earthly origin? But I don't think "space" implies "air-based". No idea what makes it a navy. o.O I think they just want naval battles in space.

I was thinking etymologically.
No idea what makes it a navy.
Presumably that it's made of nāvēs "ships"?
