Monopoly: Klingon Edition
Thursday, 4 October 2012 23:44I played Monopoly: Klingon Edition with Gerulats this evening: Peter and Luca played, Bettina baked snacks and watched occasionally.
Luca ended up running out of money first, and then it looked at as if Peter was going to drop out, too… but then I ended up on Qo'noS twice in fairly quick succession and the tide turned quickly, and then I was bankrupt just a few rounds later.
Such is life in the Klingon Empire: don’t watch out for a moment and you’re on your way to Sto'vo'kor to join the Black Fleet with your glorious ancestors!

And that it was a pretty significant step that the symbols we’d occasionally used to write Klingon with were now “blessed” by being used in an officially licenced product.
I guess I’m an incurable language geek if I buy a game for the language and not for the setting.
You play yours and I’ll play mine :)

Unlike, say, the vi/emacs debate, where people generally only need one text editor, I can imagine people can usefully watch multiple science fiction shows set in space.
Since I don't know any Klingon, though, mine's probably easier for me to play. There's "Galactic" symbols on the money, but it's just directly-coded English. :)
Everything (community and event cards, the board, title deed cards) is bilingual in the game (Klingon/English), so knowledge of Klingon is not necessary here, either.

Date: Friday, 5 October 2012 20:42 (UTC)Though speaking of death, one card I drew said something along the lines of “You die betraying the empire. Go directly to jail; do not pass Go, do not draw 200 forces.”
Which paints a rather unusual picture of death in-game!
I suppose the jail does double duty as Gre'thor, the netherworld where the spirits of the dishonoured go.
And then you reincarnate? Or respawn?
