There’s a saying that “Perl code looks like line noise”, which I referenced in a comment I left recently.

But just now I thought, how many people will still get the reference?

In this day of fibre-to-the-home and ADSL and cable Internet, how many people have seen line noise garble the data transmitted by a modem? (For that matter, I’m not even sure I have seen line noise, even though I did use modems for quite a while, and even text-only interfaces for several of those years.)

Shorthand

When I mentioned to Stella that I was considering learning shorthand, she said she had wanted to learn shorthand for quite a while, too, and that she would be up for learning it together with me.

So, perhaps we’ll have to see.

(My current favourite is Stiefografie; Deutsche Einheitskurzschrift may be more wide-spread and “standard”, but the use of pressure/stroke width turns me off a bit. And using something geared to German means both of us can use it. And I have no idea where I’d find information on, say, Gregg for German.)
