There’s a saying that “Perl code looks like line noise”, which I referenced in a comment I left recently.

But just now I thought, how many people will still get the reference?

In this day of fibre-to-the-home and ADSL and cable Internet, how many people have seen line noise garble the data transmitted by a modem? (For that matter, I’m not even sure I have seen line noise, even though I did use modems for quite a while, and even text-only interfaces for several of those years.)

Oh.

I tend to think of the line in "line noise" as being a line of text (e.g., line numbers); and noise as being visual... hm not garbledness, but having a lot of unnecessary symbols?

Um, yes.
