It means I've friended the journals of a number of users who are into fanfiction (e.g. eilanhp or auster), but fanfiction was not the reason I friended them.

I typically stay out of the whole thing and am a bit confused by things sometimes. (I also can't quite wrap my head around the concept of "fanfiction", though whether that's because I don't consider myself good at writing or because I feel that canon should be left alone, I don't know. But the concept of shipping people together and writing stories about them just feels weird.)

I like Harry Potter as books and films, and have been thinking about getting a Hermione icon for a while because I think she's neat, so I snagged one which I saw in someone's journal recently. But that has nothing at all to do with fanfic.

I just liked that quote because I thought it's kind of internally contradictory - X fanfiction (for any value of X) that disregards X canon isn't really X fanfiction, is it?
