In their newsletter 12/04, teltarif.de had this interesting bit of news (see section 10):

Um Kunden loszuwerden, anstatt sie anzulocken, hat der Internetanbieter 1 & 1 eine Prämie in Höhe von 100 Euro ausgesetzt. Das Angebot richtet sich an so genannte Poweruser im Tarif Fair.Flat, die seit einiger Zeit regelmäßig mehr als 20 Gigabyte Traffic verursachen. Diese erhalten die 100 Euro und können das vom Anbieter gestellte Modem behalten, wenn sie ihren Vertrag bei 1 & 1 kündigen. Auf diesem Wege soll allen Surfern ein Angebot ohne Qualitätseinschränkungen gewährleistet werden. Weiteres dazu steht in unserer News unter http://www.teltarif.de/s/s13133.html.

Quick translation:

In order to lost customers rather than attract them, the Internet provider 1 & 1 has offered a reward of €100 [USD 123, CAD 164, GBP 67, AUD 165]. The offer is directed to so-called "power users" who use the rate "Fair.Flat" and who have regularly used more than 20 Gigabytes of traffic in the past. So I suppose their goal is to get high-bandwidth users to move to another company's backbone so that 1 & 1's lines stay relatively free.

(Incidentally, I'm rather amused at the coincidence that has CAD and AUD being worth nearly exactly the same—Xe.net puts the conversion rate at 1 CAD = 1.00412 AUD.)
