I'm vaguely considering switching my email client.

I've used Pegasus Mail for years and have lots of mails stored there, which means this is not an easy decision. But Pegasus Mail still doesn't support character sets in emails, instead interpreting all characters as Windows-1252. Specifically, this means that it doesn't support UTF-8, which is not so good.

Also, now that I have a computer running Windows XP, which supports Unicode a whole lot better than the Windows 98 which was on my old machine, I'd like to be able to use this power.

If I do get around to switching email clients, are there any POP3 email clients for Windows XP you can recommend? If so, why? What experiences have you had with various clients?

I really, really like Thunderbird. I've used Thunderbird, OE, Eudora, Opera's M2, webmail, and pine in recent memory (3-4 years), and Thunderbird is the best of the lot in my opinion. Now, I'm far from a mail expert, and I use POP3 (not, say, IMAP), but it works well for me. My only complaint is that it crashes about 75% of the time when I label messages. But [livejournal.com profile] chrisg tells me he doesn't have this problem, so I don't know what's going on there.

Yup, Thunderbird rocks! I am expected to use the unspeakable evil that is Outlook at work, but I'm planning on installing Thunderbird when I get enough time!

Its complete negligence of character sets is why I never seriously considered even trying Pegasus. I had also once written to the authors to ask when it will support Unicode, but I never received a reply.

I am currently using Thunderbird, and pretty happy with it, although its Spam filter could really be better. Maybe I should switch that back to SpamAssassin again, which I used to use back when I was obsessed with Opera. :)

You can't beat mutt as far as I'm concerned. And there's a Win32 version that runs under Cygwin.
