Today is 22/7—Pi Approximation Day! Have fun, all ye maths geeks! :)

Which leads me to an important question: Is 22/7 higher or lower than Pi? :)

22/7 vs. pi

Higher - 3+1/7 is 3.1428... while pi is 3.1415...

355/113 is a much better approximation - even though it only has three digits each in numerator and denominator, its decimal expansion agrees with pi to six decimal places (3.1415929... instead of 3.1415926...). I believe this fraction is credited to a Chinese mathematician.

Ah, thanks. Could have of course checked that out myself, I now realise.

I guess studying Computer Architecture and Combinatorics yesterday was too much for my brain :)

Who wants an approximation when you can start trying to have the real thing? ;)

Heh, I celebrated Pi Approximation Day on the 14th of March. My preferred date format being Big Endian: yyyy.mm.dd

I've heard 14 March called Pi Day, so I've taken over the name as well. *shrug*

Apparently, the main celebrations are on 3/14 at 1:59 pm - very American, obviously, both for the MM/DD order and for using a 12-hour clock. But I didn't make it up.
