When I went shopping at Aldi before work this morning, I saw that the cashier who served me had a tattoo on his arm, between elbow and wrist—obviously Japanese, judging by the form of the last character: 安吉実.

I'd translate the three characters as "peace - good luck/joy - truth".

Since kanji tend to be polysemous, though (have multiple meanings), I may have picked up on the wrong meaning he intended for the characters. (If, indeed, he picked them out for meaning in the first place and not just because "they look pretty".)

I can't help wondering when I see people with tattoos of Chinese/Japanese symbols whether they actually know what they mean (and, indeed, whether the tattooist knows)!
