Hmm… reading this entry made me glad that prayer lists in LDS temples aren't like that; the names and reasons aren't announced to the people who pray, which basically removes the ability to gossip. Though I can imagine some people might object and say that praying for a list of people whose names you don't know beyond "the names on strips of paper inside this closed pouch" might not be very sincere.

True, perhaps. But could you imagine just how much longer the endowment session would be if we read all those names, esp. here in Utah Valley? Man, and we think the temple gets backed up NOW...

Also, I think it would seriously detract from the spirit of the ceremony. Everything is so depersonalized and symbolic that if you started reading off people's names, it'd be like a jolt back to reality.

True, definitely.

But I also like, very much, the ability to submit names without anyone else but God and myself knowing whom I've asked people to pray for.

In my synagogue, no reason is given. Just the ill person's name and the name of their mother.

Oh, and it is the cantor/Rabbi who says the names.. noone else is asked to pray for someone.
