Not a bank machine, but I remember seeing one of the automated touchscreen ticket vending machine that Greater Vancouver's transit authority (http://www.translink.bc.ca) uses showing an old BIOS bootup screen once, rather than the familiar "Touch to proceed" welcome screen.

That evening on the way home, a tech was in front of the same machine. With the door open, sure enough, it was just a vanilla-looking PC inside.

Not sure about bank machines here. They all have relatively tiny screens (7"/18 cm is typical), and very few of them are touchscreen.

I once saw a local transport ticket machine saying "Disk error reading Drive C:. Abort, Retry, Fail?" (or something like that). In black and white text over part of the graphical display that it was supposed to show.

That was quite a few years ago, though.
