Google: animated image ads coming up

One thing I liked about Google ads was that so far, the ones I'd seen were text ads: less obtrusive. It actually made me more likely to click on them.

I wonder how much this will change things.

Well, at least they're site targeted, so they probably won't add too much to the ad clutter that's already there.

Google has had image-based AdSense ads for at least a year. Site owners have to choose whether or not they want text-only or text-and-image ads when they add an AdSense ad bar to a page.

(Some of the image-based ads on my tinwhistle forums (http://chiffboard.mati.ca) have been topical and very successful, like this one (http://www.lafferty.ca/stuff/misc/cedarflute.jpg), which even I have a hard time not clicking on when I see it (even though I'm not allowed to click my own ads!).

I think it's weird that an advertiser will be able to target a specific Web site. Can a site owner block a specific advertiser?

I assume the idea is to encourage competition, so I'd guess no. The idea behind AdSense has always been to offer relevent and rival adverts on pages. If the website offering them also makes profit from sales, it's up to them to evaluate the cost. This is just Google recognising that their customers are probably better at placing adverts in relevent places than Google's engines are.

I would sooner see images as adverts than text, as I can block them from ever appearing again.
