I can honestly say I've never heard the name "Papa Ratzi" as a German nickname for Pope Benedict XVI before today.
In related news, apparently there were Italian newspapers headlines referring to him as "il pastore tedesco", which translates well into "the German shepherd", in both possible meanings—and apparently, most people only understood the "dog" meaning first.
