Amy's not doing too well—she started running a fever yesterday and it's been up and down since then. Last time Stella measured, it was still 39.9 °C (103.8 °F), which is pretty darn high even for an infant.

The pædiatrician prescribed some ibuprofen syrup which she's to take when her temperature exceeds 38.5 °C (101.3 °F).

Yup, high baby fevers are scary. 99 times out of 100, though, it's something really innocuous, often viral, sometimes an ear infection. Just keep huggin'em and lovin'em. Prayers that it's nothing serious.

Slightly off topic: I remember when SI was introduced in Canada in the 70's. A lot of people whined about having to use °C instead of °F. With °F, and "normal" being 98.6, the old rule of thumb was that if it's over 100 °F, time to see the doctor.

Anyhow, the new suggested rule went like this:
37 °C: Normal;
38 °C: You're probably sick. Stay home, drink plenty of liquids, take ASA/acetaminophen/ibuprofen;
39 °C: You're definitely sick. See your doctor.
40 °C: You're very sick. Go to the hospital.

Works for me.

Sounds good to me, too.

For small children, those numbers can probably be adjusted up half a degree or so -- from what I hear, higher temperatures are more "normal" for them or they tolerate them better.

So 39 °C, for example, in a child wouldn't be as much cause for concern as in an adult.

Or: we're not taking Amy to the hospital even though she's just shy of 40 °C. (Though if she went appreciably over, we'd probably do so.)

Did your pædiatrician tell you at what temp you should be worried?
Hope she feels better soon.

She said to start giving her ibuprofen at 38.5 °C and that over 39 °C was unusually high for a "normal" fever accompanying a new tooth (which broke through a day or two ago).

She was over 40 °C during the night, which is worrying, but Stella says her temperature feels normal this morning - thank goodness.
