This reminds me of [livejournal.com profile] denial_land because she introduced me to endofworld.swf (or whatever it's called): (seen here in [livejournal.com profile] jo_english_bint).

If I added you to my friends list, would you add me to yours or not?

(This is simply a request for information, not a wish to be added to your list. I will not be in the least hurt by an answer in either direction.)

Not necessarily.

You're always welcome to add me to your friends list, though, as it says on my userinfo. I don't always friend everyone back, especially as I try to read all personal journals on my friends list, so when I don't have enough time and have to skim too much, I tend to cut down (and not add new users unless they look particularly compelling).

Incidentally, I assumed I was on your friends list, since you occasionally pop in with a comment.

If you like, I'll add you now. You seem to write fairly frequently, but what I skimmed looked interesting at least in part. If I find I can't keep up, I'll stop reading you, at least for a while (your choice of getting defriended or just being removed from my Default View - I don't mind if you read my FO entries).

Hmm ... Well, if you will add me at least for a trial period, then I'll add you. (Added.)

If you decide after a while not to read me any more, I'll probably revert to reading your journal at its own page.

And added you back.

Do you want to pick a particular colour to represent yourself? (Either one of LiveJournal's standard friends colours, or a custom one in (R, G, B) or HTML #rrggbb format.) I like to colour-code my friends page to make it easier to see who writes what, and sometimes I let people pick their own colours. (If not, I'll just assign something to you, depending mostly on what's already assigned so it'll be a bit distinctive -- which is getting hard now.)

If you decide after a while not to read me any more, I'll probably revert to reading your journal at its own page.

Why is that? You prefer not to friend people who don't friend you back?

Some kind of blue would be nice; any of the livejournal standard blues would be fine.

I've been trying to figure out my internal logic behind it, and the best I can figure out is that I like to have at least some slight relationship with the people on my friends list, even if it's simply that we read each other's journals.

Such an overloaded concept.

I wonder whether it would be easier if there were separate "watch lists" and "trust lists" (and possibly even a "friends list" for those who want that sort of thing).

I'd often want to entrust someone I don't necessarily want to watch, or vice versa, but that's difficult with the current all-in-one concept. I wonder whether you'd feel the same about adding someone to a watchlist as you currently do adding them to a friends list.

I'm not sure. It's not exactly an issue of trust either, though. There are one or two people I read but don't add to my friends list that I would trust at least as much if not more than some of the people who are on my friends list.
