A 4-page contract that a man expected his wife to sign, detailing her marital responsibilities with respect to things such as clothing, behaviour, and penalties for not conforming to the terms of said contract.

Bizarre. My first thought was that maybe it was a Lifestyle thing, you know, like submission/dominance or slave/master...but if it's going to court then obviously somebody has a problem with it.

Poor lady. I wonder how long that lasted.

Yeah, I couldn't really believe this was actually a real thing. Bizarre.

that's what I thought to, but if she never signed it and gave it to the police, then it likely wasn't her Lifestyle choice.

And she actually married (or stayed with, depending on the timeline) him?

From one of the news stories that Google helped me find, we learn that the offence occurred in "Pottawattamie County". Oy.

I've heard that some in the BDSM community will do contracts like this between each other; however, it's always (supposed to be) consensual. Sounds like this lady was totally and completely not interested. Stupid twit. Add that to the child porn charges he's facing and I just can't wait to see how he gets treated in prison. (Assuming he's convicted, of course....)

I don't suppose there is a non-graphical version online? Not that I really need to read this.

I don't know if it'll be particularly easy to read so you might have to copy & paste it somewhere better, but I posted a transcription at http://callete.com/links/2006/02/wifely-expectations/#more-422

Aside from the kidnapping and child pornography, it isn't really all that bizarre, IMO. It's not the lifestyle I would lead, but it works for some people. Clearly I don't know all the facts in relationship to this, but it just sounds like a dominant/submissive relationship gone bad. They were already married (the news articles don't say how long), so the wife must have known at least some of his tendencies before marrying him. The fact that the contract was supposed to be signed says to me that he wanted her consent and did not wish to force anything on her, but that may not be the case.

Also, the news stories like this one (http://www.ketv.com/newsarchive/6783868/detail.html) also mentions he is "is accused, among other things, of giving his wife chances to win 'good behavior days'", which I don't entirely understand. Is it actually illegal to write up contracts between a husband and wife? It clearly wasn't legally binding, so I don't see what the big deal is at all. He may be a sick man for other reasons, but how does the unsigned contract prove anything at all?

It really does sound to me like they had dominant/submissive relationship and the wife had enough of it, so decided to portray it in entirely different light to land her husband in jail. Even the charge of "sexual assault" may be nothing more than their normal rough play that they both consented to.

It could very well be that he abused his wife and she was a victim of a sick-minded man, but it could be the other way too. Also, what do they mean by the charge of kidnapping? Would tying her to the bed constite kidnapping?

As a side note, please excuse the many grammatical and spelling mistakes I've found after posting. Next time, I should probably re-read and edit the reply before posting ;)
