Poor Amy isn't feeling well today; she threw up in our bed twice during the night and again once this morning. Stella said she has diarrhoea, too.

She also looks really "schlapp" (LEO suggests "floppy" and "flabby", but that doesn't really fit. Droopy?) and wanted to cuddle a lot. Poor girl.

She also hadn't eaten any solids by the time I left for work, though she's usually eaten at least two small breakfasts by then. Hope she'll be better soon. (And I think it's probably good for her that she's still being nursed, partly; I expect she'll nurse more than usual today.)

Update 17:25: She's running a fever of 40 °C (104 °F), Stella just told me. Poor girl.

Poor Amy, I hope she will be well soon.

Yesterday I read a short article about babies as sign language in the April edition of ELTERN. I got a subcription for one Year as a present, so I got it before it is in the shops.

They say that it is quite good for the children to know some basic words so that they can express themselves better and then they are less frustrated because we don't understand them.

Poor little munchkin! I hope she's better soon!

Ernie is only just now well enough to go back to school. I swear, it's the Plague.

Poor Amy! This long, cold winter seems to have got into everyone's immune system. Everywhere around me (and here at home too) I hear sniffing and coughing. And all the other people are at home with "Magen-Darm".

Lets hope everything will get better with the coming spring.

A few weeks ago Frederick had a day where all he could do was lie on the bed and look around because he was so sick (and you have seen how active he usually is).

Maternal milk should really help Amy to get better soon.

Poor baby! Lots of hugs and liquids (yes, the continued nursing at this point is definitely A Good Thing).

I don't know what the German brand equivalent would be, but if you can find something like Pedialyte at the drug store, or even Gatorade or Powerade at the grocery store, see if Amy will keep any of that down, too. Good to keep the electrolytes in balance.

Stella said she gave her some cola at around three, and that she hasn't thrown up nor had a bowel movement since.

(Stella grew up with cola as a panacea for stomach bugs and the like, but I think "cola and salt sticks" is pretty common in Germany as folk medicine for upset stomach. So Stella tries to keep cola in stock for "medicinal" use.)

Oh, and Stella asked a friend to come over and give her a sick blessing. (Which Amy wasn't happy with -- tried to get his hands off her head -- but she's sleeping now.)

Cola and salt would also do the trick (although I'd worry a tad about the caffeine with a wee one ... not causing harm, but perhaps not letting her sleep).

For blessings with sick little ones, I used to just hold them. I know when I'm sick, I don't like having anything on my head, hands or whatever. If she's comfortable with the priesthood holder, maybe just try that next time. (Mine are all too big for that now ... sigh ...)

Best wishes!

schlapp sounds a lot like the Icelandic slappur, which I translate into English as lethargic. Don't consider me an expert though, by any means.

I hope Amy gets well soon, and that neither you nor Stella catch anything from her.

"Lethargic" does cover a large part of what I was trying to convey; thanks!

Sounds a lot like the sort of thing Erika went through recently -- she spent about a week just wanting to nurse and cuddle.

I hope Amy gets better quickly!

So do we.

Stella said she'd gotten quite a bit thinner, and she's fairly light for her age to begin with; she's beginning to worry about her, especially since she often throws up just after nursing -- so she's wondering how much is staying inside.

They say children are remarkably resilient -- but we're still beginning to worry.
