I found a translation of the well-known "studies at an English university" text (as long as the first and last letter are correct, the rest of the letters can be jumbled up and you can still read it) in Russian:

I showed it to Sveta and she could, indeed, read it fairly quickly. (However, it seems that this version has largely preserved the order of consonants and of vowels in words, just mingling the two sets of letters a bit differently; this most certainly contributes to the legibility.)

Can someone tell me what that text should properly be? I can read part of the text, but I don't have enough vocabulary to recognise many of the words and figure out what they should be.

The only thing I have to add to this discussion is this, composed by a professor at UBC where I used to study and sent to me by a grad student friend there:

По результатам? ??? одного англйского университета, не имеет значения в каком порядке расположены буквы в слове. Главное, чтобы первая и последняя буквы были на месте.
Остальные буквы могут сделовать б полном беспорядке, бсе-равно текст читается без проблем.
??? етого ябляется то, что мы не читаем каждую букву по отдельности, а все слово целиком.

I couldn't make out some words. And in "resultat" is a second l which I couldn't place. But then I was guessing most of the time.

Yes, the second "l" was in the source I copied from, but appears to be a mistake.

I never could make my brain read the English version, and not speaking russian puts me at a severe disadvantage for reading the russian. I think it all has to do with how you learn to read: phonetically versus the word or "cow" method. Since I learned phonetically, I actually read every letter, it's just that years of practice mean I read it quickly.

Для справки:
Во многих древних языках при написании текстов не использовались гласные буквы (в древнерусском языке - тоже), тем не менее, тексты читались без проблем.
