Which reminds me I need to get the girls identifying colours in French. Is she learning to identify them in English and German both?

Stella says she thinks Amy knows "red" and "green" in German.

Those are also her most reliable in English; while she's said "blue" and "yellow" appropriately often enough, she sometimes uses the wrong name for those colours, refuses to give any name for them, or uses those names for other colours.

Better than part 1, though, which apparently I never posted: She realised about three weeks ago or so that "gween" was an acceptable answer to "what colour is that?", so she'd use it for almost any such question :p If I said "no", she'd sometimes volunteer "weh" (red) or "boo".

I figured that of the theories "she's colour-blind" and "she lacks the ability to make the abstraction necessary to realise that two blue things have something in common, namely, their colour", the latter was more likely.

She's definitely got the latter concept down by now, though as I said, she's not always correct. Perhaps she's not confident yet in her ability to categorise infinitely variable colours into "slots" properly.

How about her passive understanding? When you say "Bring me the green (whatever)", will she bring you the right object?

Pfft. Get back to me when she's discovered purple and magenta. I still can't tell the difference.

I had considered introducing such colours as "taupe" and "écru" :)

One of my problems was not being able to make such distinctions myself; for example, a specific problem was whether to render what I'd call "lila" in German with "purple" or "violet", which are exact synonyms for me in English. (I'm going with "purple", FWIW.)

Do you make a distinction between the two?

(As for magenta, I think it's closer to pink and red than to violet. But I'd probably use "magenta" rarely outside the discussion of computers or the German Telecom, which uses it as its signature colour and has even tried to sue other companies that use it.)

To me, those colours are either a shade of pink or a shade of blue. Maybe reddish sometimes. Magenta and purple are made-up words. And people say I'm colourblind...
