The computer starts up quickly again!

Stella thought that something might be wonky with the DVD burner, since it also sometimes did strange things when playing DVDs, so she unplugged it this morning—and lo and behold, the Pentium logo only appeared briefly, and she said that even the Windows start-up screen was there for a shorter time than usual!

So, I suppose that's good. At least, until I want to backup stuff or otherwise burn CDs or DVDs.

I don't call that a real solution, as noted in your final sentence. Find the DM75 somewhere for a new drive.

That would turn out rather difficult, seeing as we haven't used DM for five years now :)

But yes, buying a new burner sounds like a good idea. (No idea whether EUR 40 is what that would cost here, though.)

:-) Yup. Just being silly.

I don't know the prices of technology in Germany, to be honest, but they do seem to be dropping every day in the places I *am* aware of (mostly the USA and UK). ZB: My wife got me a fairly high-end DVD+/-R(W) drive (at the time) that was about $120. Six months later, I saw a better drive for somewhere around half that price.
