I must admit I find it slightly annoying how the trainer keeps going on about "das HTTP-Protokoll".

People in apihna would call this sort of thing "PNS syndrome" -- an abbreviation for "PIN number syndrome", from people who talk about "PIN numbers", which are "personal identification number numbers". Similarly with the "Hypertext Transfer Protocol Protokoll".

Sometimes people don't know (or have forgotten) what the acronym stands for. Even if you *know* what it means you may not parse it properly - some acronyms have pretty much made it into the language as words of their own, and brains deal with them as words. Not http so much - I don't think it gets used in normal conversation all that much. But PIN definitely, as well as ATM (people often go looking for an ATM machine - there's another one) CD, DVD, there are loads that we use that we don't even think about anymore.

That doesn;t make it less annoying, of course.

Yes, I suppose. (And sometimes we guess wrongly -- for example, I thought "YES scheme" was such an error, but it's not: it expands to "Youth Employment Service scheme", apparently.)

Maybe I should just shut up for the rest of the day; I seem to be unreasonably worked up. (See also my later entry about HTTP refresh header -- or better, don't.)

Hehe - it is a tad annoying - especially when someone is supposed to be to teaching you something.

Not to forget the "SMS Service" and the "HIV Virus"...
