Private messaging

Well, well, well -- looks as if private messaging will be coming to a LiveJournal near you at some point in the near future.

I vaguely remember a suggestion for a kind of screened comment that could be seen not only by the journal owner but also by the poster of the replied-to comment being shot down because that could be used for private messaging, and that wasn't what LiveJournal was for.

But now that The Powers That Be are The Power That Were and there are new Powers now doing their Being, things change.

(Much as advertising was a change that was not, I believe, envisioned by TPTW.)

Actually the Powers That Be are roughly the same as The Powers That Were - new features are mostly up to the team and the team ahs remained pretty constant.

I think the main difference is that the response to requests for private messaging -- "That's what email is for" -- are basically no longer valid, since email is essentially a lost cause for most personal communications due to the overwhelming spam problem.

Yeah. If we could do some fun XMPP bridging, I'm down for private messaging. But I think TPTB would rather send you a "go read your comment here!" email, increasing page/ad views.... Vox actually just regressed in this regard, due to un-A/B-tested theories of increased site activity if only links to content were emailed.... *sigh*

Hopefully LJ comment emails don't regress in the same way -- I understand not delivering the content over jabber (4k in an IM client is not so great) but I'd be really frustrated to lose the ability to read the comments in my email.

Not to mention that I really appreciate the ability to find old comments or entries by grepping my mailbox.
