The first of my new books arrived!

Unfortunately, the C++ in a Nutshell that I bought in "used - like new" condition ("never read") turned out to have a big crease down the front cover, which rather annoyed me. (And "reduced-price copy with flaws" stamped on the bottom several times over.)

However, I'm not annoyed enough to try to fight it out with Amazon; I've heard that they can be remarkably unhelpful in dealing with Marketplace sellers, so I'll just suck up the money I paid and keep the book.

If I had known the condition beforehand, I might still have bought it, but likely not for the price I paid.

And Describing Morphosyntax had a slight crease, but one as bad.

But yay! New books!

I've dealt with Amazon.co.uk a few times regarding marketplace sellers and had no problems, but whether the same holds true for Amazon.de I couldn't say (I did buy one thing from a third party seller on Amazon.de once as nowhere else in the world seemed to have it and I had no problems):)

I had just read one story about how Amazon was unwilling to intervene regarding the condition of the item.

On the one hand, the plural of "anecdote" is not "data", and that need not have been representative; on the other hand, I'm not sure whether I want to invest the emotional energy into getting the book returned etc.

So I think I'm just going to write off the money, especially since apart from the big crease along the front and a couple of smudges, it does appear to be in decent condition.

Sometimes despite feeling that these things should be dealt with on principle, it is not always worth the hassle - if the book is readable, then that is the main concern. I've had several occasions where people just haven't sent me things and only when pressed on the matter have they said "oh we don't have it any more". Most bizarre, but that's people for you!:D
