I know "about 850–890" kanji according to this online kanji test.

I was surprised at some of the readings I remembered, even though I haven't "done" Japanese for... over 10 years now, I suppose.

Ooh, I got 1300 to 1400, that's a lot more than I thought! There were a lot that I recognized and couldn't remember off the top of my head so I didn't check them, that's really boosted my ego now.

The test made me want to have a go at JLPT - probably level 3. Even though I haven't done Japanese for years and I doubt I'd find (or make) the time needed for lessons and preparation.

I kind of miss learning Japanese. (And I did so before it was the popular thing to do!)

Ah well. Maybe some day.

Did you ever take the JLPT or the kanji kentei?

I bet you could do level 3 easily, especially with that many kanji.

I never took the JLPT, though my teachers said I should have cleared level 2 easily, and level 1 with a bit more study. Of course, that was in 2001, so I'm a bit rusty now. I think I might be able to pass level 2 with a bit of revision, maybe I'll apply for next year just for the fun of it.

I don't know whether it's because of my background in Chinese, but I found the grammar part of JLPt3 to be much more difficult than the vocabulary/kanji part, if that makes any difference.

I got only 550-570, which is rather distressing! At one time I could have gotten 90% of those in the first four categories without thinking about it, but -- forcing myself to say a reading aloud before I could check the kanji off -- I discovered that the majority of them are now "I know what that is but I can't think of it!"

I suspect I've retained a lot more grammar than kanji, though; I was always (relatively) weak at kanji.

Oh, nice! I wonder if there's anything like that for Chinese Hanzi out there... I'd like to try that one.

Try http://www.clavisinica.com/character-test-applet.html . (That was linked on [livejournal.com profile] zhongwen recently.)

Thanks. I already found it, I got 2103 characters for Advanced + Simplified + 72 characters.

Grar, that applet is frustrating. It's somewhat slow and there's no indication when it's already processing your previous click. If you click twice (because you think you haven't clicked it already) it takes your second click to be the answer of the next question. Had that happen several times.

Also frustrating is how much I've forgotten! There were some I swear I should have known -- and would have known five years ago, but which I could not remember exact details/context for.

(2387 for advanced+traditional+72 is not bad, but I suspect I would have done better if I weren't so rusty)

It also occasionally lists the same reading twice -- and then you need to figure out which of the two choices is the "right" one.

I'd almost forgotten about that problem. It happened to me twice or thrice. I'm not sure how badly that skewed the results *g*
