I had always assumed that Linnea was an Irish name, presumably because I first became aware of it through [livejournal.com profile] ailbhe.

Today, I saw the name again and thought I'd look it up on Wikipedia to see where it comes from and, perhaps, what it means; apparently it's Swedish (and often spelled there with an acute accent: Linnéa) and comes from a flower which Linnaeus named after himself.

The things you learn!

My wife's family is Swedish, and we're already well-acquainted with the name. Her eldest aunt is named Gunhild Linnea, she herself is named Linn (or Linn-Marie), and we gave our eldest daughter the name Mariann Linnea. (The "Mariann" is a morph of her two late grandmothers' names, Marie-anne and Marion.)
