So Stella decided to reinstall Windows on her PC, since it's been acting up a little.

She wasn't too worried about it, since she doesn't have that much data on it (and she backed up the most important of it), and what was the worst thing that could happen?

Try Windows coming up with a black screen after installation and not responding. Not even the keyboard lights if you, say, toggle Num Lock of something.

She blames it on some update or other since the actual installation went through, and this borkage happened only after it installed fifty-odd updates and took the better part of an hour.

Makes me glad I never tried that stunt; seems I was right to distrust the "restore to factory settings" promise on the install CD. It worked quite a bit better fresh from the factory, thankyouverymuch.

I offered to install Ubuntu on it for her; she wasn't too enthusiastic.

I wonder what will happen next, and whether she'll get it working somehow.
