Amy, on discovering that the orangeade in her cup had gone flat overnight: "Mami, meine Brause ist gedreht inzu Wasser!"

I guess you have to know English to understand that... :)

That's really cute.
[livejournal.com profile] nitaq was wondering: Did you understand her immediately, or did it take you a second to realise what she said?

I got it straight away, but I think it's easier when you see it in writing.

It took me half a second to realise that, wait, this doesn't make sense in German, quickly translate into English, and figure out what "drehen" had to do with it.

Took me a moment even in writing. Very amusing!

Let's see if that German I HAD to learn for a song in choir back in HS still works in my head.

Mami, my *something* is turned into *something--water???*.

"Brause" is fizzy powder (according to my dictionary) or the drink that is made from it. And yes, "Wasser" is water. Basically, the carbonic acid has evaporated, and made the fizzy drink non-fizzy.

Eva supplied the translation; I'll just mention that the sentence totally doesn't work in German (I'd say something like "meine Brause ist zu Wasser geworden" = my fizzy drink/lemonade/... became water or "meine Brause hat sich in Wasser verwandelt" = my fizzy drink has changed into water).

But "has turned into", with a real "turn" verb, only works in English, not in German, which is why it amused me that Amy said it the way she did.
