Stella made a cross-stitch advent calendar for Amy:

Advent calendar

And she managed to finish it before December, even with the whole house thing going on! (She's been at it since at least this summer.)

How does it work? I mean, chocolate advent calendars you open one each day -- do you mark these somehow?

The little red circles beneath the numbers are little plastic rings attached to the cloth at the top. How it works is you tie little presents to the rings - e.g. in little burlap bags, or just wrapped in paper, or whatever.

My favorite part of December as a month was hanging little felt "ornaments" on the felt advent tree. I wonder if that is particular to Germany or Europe in general? I live in America, though my mother was born in Germany.

Hm, felt ornaments on a felt advent tree doesn't sound like a custom I'm familiar with. But it could still well be a German or European tradition; there are lots of regional things some people do.

We did that, too! And the last ornament (hung on the 24th) was Santa Claus.

Last year I finally bought a Playmobil advent calendar where each box is a little figure that goes into the scene. You're meant to give it to your child to add to their Playmobil collection (and buy the next year's calendar the next year), but since I don't have any kids, I just packed it back up to use this year.

Amy would like one of those Playmobil advent calendars :)

Stella decided to buy a little Playmobil box and divide up the contents herself and hang them on the home-made advent calendar - she figured she'd get about twelve "portions" out of the items inside, and then use something else (sweets, perhaps) for the other twelve.
