I was browing Wikipedia just now and came across the article about PKZIP.

I read through the version history: 2.50, first version for Windows (3.1/95/NT), 1999, ho hum.

Read, read... version 5? 8? 11? 12.1, released 2008-06-03?

These guys are still around?

I thought they had faded into oblivion and went bankrupt or something, since WinZip seems to be the de facto ZIP file creation utility if you want something that costs money.

Dude.

In fact, PKZIP is still alive and well. PKWARE has entered the security sphere and SecureZIP is the next generation of the PKZIP product. It offers great security functionality while still providing compression. The product for the desktop even allows you to encrypt Microsoft Office files. A pretty handy tool, indeed! Check it out www.pkware.com

Edit: Yes, we did: http://pne.livejournal.com/773865.html?thread=2863081#t2863081 :)

the actual compression algorithm used in the program is not proprietary software, but is in fact shareware created by someone else entirely (See Wikipedia entries for WinZip & PKZIP).

I knew that PKWARE had developed the algorithm and that it was first implemented in PKZIP, so I hadn't bothered reading the entries then. Perhaps I should have!
