Kanji mood theme

I thought I'd play around with custom mood themes and create a kanji mood theme (alphabetical order by mood name, tree view showing which mood inherits from which).

Edit: You're welcome to use my mood theme images! But if you do so, please copy them to a server of your own so you're not using my bandwidth. I'm providing a ZIP file and a tarball with the images so you can upload them all at once rather than having to copy one at a time from the moodtheme listing. Pick one archive or the other; both contain the same files. The tarball is smaller (6K vs 16K), but the ZIP file is probably easier to work with if you're on a Windows system.

The file also contains a file called "console.txt" that contains the commands necessary to set up the mood theme; just replace "http://moodthemes.mizinamo.org/kanjitheme/" with the URL you have uploaded the images to and "17068" with the number of your mood theme, then paste the entire file into the box in the admin console.

Oh, and if you use my mood theme, I'd appreciate it if you drop me a line (email address is in my userinfo) to say so, just so I have an idea of how many people use it.

Edit 2: There's now also a set of kanjitheme images in white-on-transparent-black, for use on dark backgrounds. Fetch it as a ZIP file or a tarball.

You need to have a paid account in order to use custom mood themes, though.

If you decide to get one, though, you can just snag http://www.wunschzetel.de/pics/kanjitheme/kanjitheme.zip, which contains the images as well as a script with the console commands you need. Just upload the images to your own web space, please, and adjust the URLs in console.txt accordingly.

Some of them may be Japanese simplifications.

Incidentally, over at Blurty (http://www.blurty.com/), someone made an entire mood theme in Chinese (http://www.blurty.com/moodlist.bml?moodtheme=9). In colour, even! This one has multi-character moods; I tried to restrict mine to one each.

I don't like the Blurty set as much. They're too big, the grammar is inconsistent and some of the expressions are too regional/colloquial for me. I like yours much better. Maybe I'll do my own Chinese set with one character like yours =)

I don't know enough Chinese to be able to tell, but I wonder whether the guy who made the Blurty set simply used an English-Chinese dictionary to get the words.

Are there any particular characters you have problems with? Here are a couple that may be a bit troublesome:

恋 = 戀; 変 = 變; 芸 = 藝; 楽 = 樂; 酔 = 醉; 騒 = 騷

Also, 働 is a Japanese-created character that means "to work".

I don't know Japanese but some of the characters do not seem to be appropriate, if in Chinese. I am not sure whether the meanings of some Chinese and Japanese kanji characters are so distinct. For example, 騷 in Chinese is far away from "annoyed". I would say "horny" is close ;)

I believe that it is VERY different as an individual character in Chinese. If anyone describes himself/herself 騷, something must be wrong.

Wow, thanks! If you want, fetch that ZIP file again; I added about a dozen new icons so that some moods have a more specific one rather than inheriting it from a parent.

To the best of my knowledge, LiveJournal no longer accepts submissions for official mood themes (I believe partly because of bandwidth considerations) and hasn't done so for quite a while. The guide still says submissions are accepted, true, but that is because it is rather out of date.

If you have recent information to the contrary from one of LiveJournal's main developers, I'd be happy to hear about it.

I don't have any clue, I just remember reading it on the FAQ. It wasn't till recently I started to even look into major customization of my journal.

Not at the moment; I'm pretty much satisfied with the assignments as they are now.

For the moods which currently have no icon, (a) I can't think of suitable kanji and (b) I don't really use them so they haven't been a priority for me.

Do you have any suggestions for additions and changes?

Oh you rock! I found your theme on GJ after a google search for mood themes and really wanted to use it, but didn't know where to find the myterious "PNE" so I searched lj and GJ and poof heres the info I needed. Off to download, upload...and credit.

I used to use your mood theme on DJ and GJ and was pretty peeved that it wasn't on LJ because it's so awesome. So now that I got a paid account, one of the first things I did was upload this theme! Thansk for the great theme, PNE! ^_^

Yeah - I guess because LiveJournal is bigger, so they can more easily afford to ignore new submissions. AFAIK, they haven't been accepting submissions for years now.

Thanks for saying you like it! (And thanks for hosting it on your own server! Occasionally, people just use my images, and while I'm glad they like my theme, it'd be great if they used their own bandwidth, not mine.)
