I wanted to buy some printer paper today.

They had the sort that I liked (it's heavier than usual, at 100 g/m² vs. the more usual 80 g/m², for one thing), but all the packets on display were opened at one end.

I asked one of the employees whether they had any unopened ones, and he said he was afraid not. He also said that those packets are typically opened by people who want to be sure that the paper inside is not blue (the predominant colour on the packaging) but were indeed white. Whatever.

"opened by people who want to be sure that the paper inside is not blue (the predominant colour on the packaging)"

Working in a shop for a living, this does not surprise me at all. Customers are largely quite stupid. "Does this '2 for £3' sticker mean I can get 2 for £3?", "This says 'buy one, get one free, so can I get another?" or today after a woman had paid for her shopping and got all her stuff together "can I take [my shopping]?" - drives me crazy!!

As a retail veteran, I'm sorry to say that they're right. About 80% of consumers are normal people like you and me, but there's that 20% who have to open all the packages, taste the crackers, test the dropability of extremely fragile items, and "Parents" who think we retailers are the best babysitters while they shop.
