According to a news item on heise.de (in German), Lycos is going to close its Tripod web hosting service in about four weeks' time.

Like many others "back in the day", I had (well, probably still have, technically) a little toy homepage there. That'll be gone, then. Ah well.

But there'll probably be quite a few things on Tripod that are old but still useful, and that will also be gone once Tripod closes, and that'll be a pity.

(I also still have a GeoCities page somewhere.)

Oh yes! Yahoo bought it quite a while ago and kept it around.

i remember it had a little street and you could choose where to 'live'

Yes, those were the days. And you had little "neighbourhoods" and sub-neighbourhoods, and the people on adjacent addresses were your neighbours (you could navigate up and down the "street"), and different neighbourhoods had different themes (religion, politics, science, ...).

All that got chucked when Yahoo bought GeoCities, though -- after that, the official address was simply http://www.geocities.com/yourloginname/ (though the previous http://www.geocities.com/Neighbourhood/1234 addresses still worked if you had one of those from before the purchase, as I did), and it became yet another free website hoster.

Which was a pity, I thought, because I thought the whole neighbourhood and house-number shtick was rather cute.

Yeah... and remember what they looked like, in terms of HTML/design? :)

"Under construction" signs, animated "email me!" buttons, "Best viewed in Netscape Navigator 4", Times New Roman on medium-grey background, ...

Those were the days, eh? :D

ugh i had so many blinkies on my page it was possibly the cause of several epileptic fits around the world!

yes that's exactly the neighbourhood I remember. I had gone back to look for them a few years later and wondered why I could never find them! Pity, it really was a cute idea. Not too practical, but sweet.

Seems like they're closing down their internet business step by step... At first they stopped being internet provider and sold all their customers to freenet, and now they stop hosting services as well...

Tripod free hosting closing

I have a website on tripod, its very sad they are closing, I put alot of work into building my site there. They have been a great service to use since the early 1990's!

I have found a website http://free-host-directory.com where you can find alternatives to reallocate your tripod site to.

Today I started to take backups, I want to get my site moved and put a redirection up for at least a few weeks to let me sites visitors know of my new address.

Fair well Tripod!

From the Lycos website:

"Dear LYCOS Webhosting customer,

As we announced on November 27, 2008, LYCOS Web Hosting will cease its activities in the first quarter of 2009. Until then you can use the services of LYCOS Web Hosting and ,therefore, have enough time to find a new home for your website(s)."
