Apparently, Bahrain means "two seas".

I knew baħar "sea" and I knew -ayn (mt -ejn) "(dual suffix)", but I never made the connection.

True!

And some things seem so obvious yet are still wrong :) Like the time I thought that "sich bewerben" (to apply, e.g. for a job) meant "to advertise oneself" (since "werben" in modern German is "to advertise" and "etwas bewerben" is "to advertise something"), but [livejournal.com profile] muckefuck said that was unlikely to be the source - that it was more likely from the idea of "work" or "apply oneself to a task" that's still seen in "jemanden umwerben" (to woo someone, to court someone) and probably in "Gewerbe" (industry, craft, trade) and, I suppose, in "erwerben" (to acquire, usually in exchange for work or money).
