When I came home, there was a little present awaiting me on my desk: a little box of "Stollenkonfekt" with a note saying "Fröhe Weihnachten :)".

Stella said that she had seen some of this in the shop and decided to get me some. It's traditionally eaten around Christmas, but I'm sure Hamburg is not the only place where they start selling Christmas things in September.

Anyway, I took off the note and saw the "best before" date printed on the cellophane wrapper: "15.11.09".

Traditional Christmas sweets—and it won't even keep until Christmas? Now that's... special.

I gather the same is true of the mince pies now on the shelves of UK supermarkets. I can't stand the things, but I might get some for Dave in a month or so.

It's all part of making sure nothing is special anymore. :-) Nothing except the income levels of the bakers, that is.
