We rented a car this week-end, and for a lark, I took my satnav with me for the drive home and switched the voice to English—I wanted to see how it would mangle the street names.

To my surprise, it did a fair job of it; I imagine, therefore, that the voices aren't really reading the spelling but that a pronunciation is stored along with each street name (as a list of phonemes or some such) and that the voices read out those.

I just though it polite to let you know I subscribed to your journal because you were recced on [community profile] followfriday. I'm here mainly for all the language-related posts. (Plus, I rememember seeing you around on [livejournal.com profile] linguaphiles).

I'm not a big commenter and I doubt you'll find my journal interesting, so don't feel like you have to reciprocate.

Bilingualism is a subject I find deeply fascinating. Language acquisition too. So, I look forward to reading about your daughter's progress. (I wish I knew German to be able to appreciate the nuances of your analysis of Amy's speech patterns, heh).

That's a comic version of me, made by an LJ friend of mine who is a very talented comic artist. Incidentally, your default icon with the duckie is very cute and unique. Actually that icon is the reason why I realised I 'knew' you from linguaphiles in the first place.

I've started using this as my default icon only recently, but I'm kind of hoping that, over time, it'll become part of my online identity. I chose it as my Gravatar as well!
