Turn right onto Grossmoahbogen
Saturday, 21 November 2009 10:19We rented a car this week-end, and for a lark, I took my satnav with me for the drive home and switched the voice to English—I wanted to see how it would mangle the street names.
To my surprise, it did a fair job of it; I imagine, therefore, that the voices aren't really reading the spelling but that a pronunciation is stored along with each street name (as a list of phonemes or some such) and that the voices read out those.

Date: Saturday, 21 November 2009 19:45 (UTC)And welcome to my journal :)
My posts tend not to be tagged consistently, and they're on a fair variety of topics, language (especially the language acquisition of my daughter) being just one of them. Still, I hope you find something that interests you occasionally!

Incidentally, your default icon with the duckie is very cute and unique. Actually that icon is the reason why I realised I 'knew' you from linguaphiles in the first place.

It was more or less a coincidence; I had no icons at all when I started out with my LiveJournal, and when I decided "I need an icon", I thought about what images I had handy and settled on some stuffed animals of mine that I had had pictures taken of by a friend at a "photoshoot" (I don't remember why), since I didn't have a digital camera at that point.
And by now I've had that icon of Martin for so long (and nearly all of that time as my default icon), that he's kind of become part of my "brand" :) As in, a recognisable sign that it's "me". Which is why I use him as my Gravatar, for example.
