I was a bit surprised, since I thought "Schmidt" was the most common family name.

Perhaps it depends on how you count related variants?

For example, if you count Schmidt + Schmid + Schmitt together, you get a little more than Müller. Adding Schmitz gives an even greater edge over Müller + Möller.

I noticed that my last name, despite having a father descended from Germans, isn't on there. But then, my last name is Anglicized, and has been so since the 1500s or something, so I'm not surprised. :)
