I was a bit surprised, since I thought "Schmidt" was the most common family name.

Perhaps it depends on how you count related variants?

For example, if you count Schmidt + Schmid + Schmitt together, you get a little more than Müller. Adding Schmitz gives an even greater edge over Müller + Möller.

Hehe, hm yes, if you count it that way. By the way, I had an André Schmidt in my class, until last grade when he changed school. *g*
