Happy birthday. I'd make you a super cool marquee, but I have begun to learn that sp0rt people really really hate them.

If I make any more, people may have channel cleansing rituals after I say the dreaded M word.

So, simply then, Happy Birthday.

And, if you spin in a circle a lot, it will look the words are ?oving which ?akes the? look ?uch like a ?arquee.

See, no "M" words.

Thank you :)

And thank you for your consideration. Yes; I, too, rather dislike scrolly or blinky things on web pages.

But there are still other pretty things that don't involve scrolling—for example, there's a birthday background that [livejournal.com profile] aquariumgirl or [livejournal.com profile] mortaine (I forget who) makes in birthday comments sometimes that's really pretty, with a table that has a background image.

I am notoriously bad for screwing up pages with tables. I always forget to close something. That's why I like marquees, all of the modifiers are within, and an unclosed tag is easily caught and fixed.

And since I'm tired and my computer is revolting I'll just think of a pretty picture in my head and send it to you. Can you see it (http://lovewithnoface.livejournal.com/27419.html)? Isn't it lovely?

The translator thing suggested that - by my bizarre method of translation, I'd guess it would mean "lucky birthday" or something similar. Half the problem, of course, is that even correctly translating "happy birthday" literally wouldn't be correct (i.e. The correct Norwegian translation is something along the lines of "congratulations of the day").

Well, it's "happy" "birthday" but the way you put it, it's just two separate words; the first word needs to change it ending to be grammatical -- "Glücklicher Geburtstag".

And even then, it wouldn't be idiomatical, as you noted. It'd refer to a birthday that is happy, but days generally don't feel emotions.

A common phrase is "Herzlichen Glückwunsch zum Geburtstag", which is literally something like "heartly luck-wish to the birthday" :)

> days generally don't feel emotions

Never thought about it like that - it's not a phrase I've ever thought about - just something you say. I guess a more grammatically correct phrase would be "(I hope you) have a happy birthday". I believe the Norwegian is "Gratulen Med Dag" (probably spelt wrong - my spelling of foreign languages is dire - and I can't quite locate my dictionary)!:p

Norwegian

I have "Gratulerer med dagen" tucked away in my mind, but I'm not sure which Scandinavian language that is.

*googles* Looks like Norwegian, judging by the domains of the search results.

Do I win anything? :)

that looks like Norwegian too (not sure of the difference between dagen and dag (probably tense)- I know I was always told to use dag by the various Norwegians I know)! You win a badge that proclaims you as a very clever individual, but then we all knew that anyway!:D

You can also have a nice picture of an Apache Helicopter as the usericon on this post!:p

OK, at first I was going to say I was pretty sure that's Danish -- I thought Norwegian had "met" instead of "med". But I was wrong, as Google showed.

It doesn't make sense, though. It translates as "Congratulate with the day". Well, maybe it's an idiom, but ...

What's particularly interesting is that, although those three words exist like that in Danish too, the Google results are all Norwegian. That would imply this is a Norwegian-only phrase even though it consists of individual words that are identical in Danish. Very interesting.
