In relation to this meme I posted, I thought I'd ask one of those questions to you, dear readers.

Do you remember why you friended me? Why was that, and roughly when?

I friend people for a variety of reasons; some friend me back, some don't. Of those who do, it's not always expected, and there are some people who friended me first (some of whom I've friended back, some of whom I haven't). I wonder what brought you to my journal, and what made you decide to "stay". (Or what made you decide to let me into your journal, if you friended me mostly or partly to put me onto a "trust list" rather than a "watch list".)

And, if you want, ask me anything you've always wanted to know about me.

I friended you after following your journal link from [livejournal.com profile] linguaphiles (and maybe also the Foxtrot feed) because you tend to post interesting things (computer- or child-language-acquisition-related mostly, but also random interesting links and notes). I tend to skip/skim your personal stuff, although it's interesting to see Life in Germany. I always worry when I randomly friend people that it seems stalkerish or that they'll feel obligated to friend me back when I know my journal is the more boring run-of-the-mill this-is-what-I-did-today sort of thing. So I'm glad to see that you welcome random one-way friendings!

It depends on the person! I do tend to get a bit surprised if someone comes and friends me "out of the blue", and some people I'm more comfortable with than others.

Thanks for telling me what you did, though; I was never quite sure where you had "come from" or what you were here for. Welcome (again)!

And I'm glad that not every reader expects to be friended back :)

I didn't know you get surprised about that. I just added you back then because I thought it was the simplest way to read your journal regularly and didn't think anything of it. But well, I suppose your feeling of surprise must have worn off in the four years that you've been on my friends list.

I think part of the surprise is having someone whom I don't know previously discover my journal and consider it worth reading.

And yes, the surprise is more at the moment of friending rather than during the whole time that I'm on someone's friends list.
