Saturday, 14 April 2007 11:22Our computer at home won't turn on any more, since yesterday (Friday). No idea what's wrong with it.
However, that motivated me to get WLAN up and running, and I'm now typing on Stella's laptop, connecting to the Internet through the WLAN adapter.
That worked after a while, though I think I'd rather see the nuts and bolts of the connection than the dumbed-down interface that the ISP provided.
For starters, I'd like to connect to the access point to configure the SSID and switch from WEP to WPA, if possible, but I can't find any such settings in the software.
Also, I keep getting popups from "Nachrichtendienst" (Windows Messaging Service?) telling me that errors were found in my registry and to download software from some dubious site to fix that. Any idea how to get rid of those, e.g. by disabling the service or blocking the incoming messages?
Also, occasionally the computer will seem to stop responding... svchost.exe is running at 99% CPU, which may be connected to that, and I have no idea what's going on here. (I also saw tftp.exe in the task manager earlier, which I found suspicious.)
I hope I'm not turning into a zombie.

Date: Saturday, 14 April 2007 11:04 (UTC)1) Stop windows messenger service (link 1 (http://www.opentechsupport.net/forums/archive/topic/11211-1.html), link 2 (http://www.lantalk.net/disable-messenger/))
2) Run Adaware and spybot S&D
The encryption capabilities are usually determined by the router, as far as I know. Our old D-Link doesn't have it, so we're stuck with WEP.
(I'm not an expert though... adaware might not fix everything. Maybe also run Avire anti-virus if you don't have it already. It's free.)
